The Chapel Hill Firefighters Association rekindled its relationship with the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) in 2001. The organizations have been working together in efforts to raise funds to help patients suffering from over 40 various types of Muscular Dystrophy. The most notable fundraiser for patients suffering with MD is the annual Labor Day weekend Jerry’s Kids Telethon. The International Association of Fire Fighters is the single largest supporter of MDA and has been raising funds for the organization for over 50 years.

The Chapel Hill Firefighters Association has conducted a variety of fundraisers for the organization. In the fall of 2002, Local 2580 hit the streets and raised nearly $2,000 for MDA. Despite the pouring rain, the men and women of the Local pulled off the first successful boot drive since the reorganization of the Local. In the spring of 2003, Local members teamed up with Whole Foods of Chapel Hill for a dog wash to benefit MDA. The dog wash was a great success, which yielded approximately $3,500 for MDA. In the fall of 2004, the members decided to go back to the “Fill the Boot” campaign and took to the streets during a hometown UNC football game. After a long hot day in the sun, the members had raised another $3,500 for MDA.

Due to the disastrous effects of Hurricane Katrina in the gulf coast in 2005, the Local decided to focus its fundraising efforts to help the victims of one of the worst storms our nation has seen. Unfortunately, we were unable to conduct both fundraising campaigns simultaneously.
Jimmy Lambert is the MDA representative for Local 2580.
